What we can learn from the 2008 presidential election…
No matter where you fall on the political spectrum, there are lessons to be learned from last night’s election results. It’s clear that…
Hope + Hard Work = Success
and people voted with a vision of the lives they want in the future.
These are critical messages to acknowledge and understand… because the parallels between the presidential election and your college search and selection process are legion.
All the candidates…
~ started the race with a vision of who they were and who they wanted to be as president
~ supported their visions with hope, strategies, and determination
~ encountered challenges along the path
~ sought support in reaching their objectives – reaching out to family, friends, peers, and new resources
~ continuously reviewed and realigned their ideas and strategies based on new information – changes in the economic, social and political environments
You will need to do the same.
> create a clear vision of who you are and who you want to be in college
> call upon your strengths to support your hope, your plan, and your perseverance
> view obstacles as challenges to be overcome rather than barriers to your goals
>use your support networks that currently exist – and expand them, reaching out to untapped resources
> revisit your ideas of what colleges/universities will be the best match for you, in light of the information that arrives in your email, your mailbox, through your research and visits (online or in person) to those settings that are of interest to you.
You, too, will succeed in reaching your goal of finding the best environments for you… it takes Hope + Hard Work… you can do it!
